The original meaning of the word “Hospice” was a place
of shelter for travelers on a difficult journey. Today, “Hospice”
is not a place; rather it is a philosophy of care…very special
care for patients and families who are facing life-limiting illnesses.
The Hospice philosophy of care focuses on excellent medical management
of symptoms, support for the patient and the family, and quality of life.
Care is provided wherever the patient is and there is continuity of care
through all settings.
Hospice of Warren County, a community based not-for-profit, Medicare certified
program, licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, accepts Medicare
and Medicaid, as well as payments from most private insurers. Generous
support from our community enables us to offer many non-reimbursed services
to our patients, their families, and many others in the community. Our
extensive bereavement services are offered at no charge not only to our
Hospice family members but also to all in our community who are dealing
with loss and grief. The DeFrees Support Program offers case management
and volunteer support to individuals who may not meet the requirements
or choose the comprehensive Hospice program.
Hospice care is a service that is provided to patients and families in
their own settings. The vast majority of those who receive our care remain
in their own homes, assisted living facilities, or nursing homes. Care
is also provided in the inpatient setting of hospitals when ordered by
physicians and when appropriate.
At this time of life’s journey, our highly trained, experienced,
and compassionate team of clinical experts and volunteers provide excellence
in end-of-life care. Honoring the individual needs and choices of our
patients and their families, we provide the highest quality of life.

PALLIATIVE CARE
The Palliative Care Service of Hospice of Warren County seeks to
improve the quality of life for persons who deal with chronic or progressive
serious illnesses.
"Palliative care" refers to treatment aimed
at relieving suffering given at any time in the course of a serious
illness.
"Hospice care" applies to persons whose expected
life spans are up to 6 months and who no longer want treatments aimed
at curing their illnesses or prolonging lives.
Palliative care can be offered at any age and at any
stage of a serious or advanced illness. It does not mean that patients
give up their desire for treatments trying to cure their illnesses (chemotherapy,
radiation treatments, surgery, etc.) and prolong their lives. This distinguishes
palliative care from hospice care. As you might have noted, "All
hospice is palliative care but not all palliative care is hospice."
